Not sure what a hybrid vehicle is? No worries, you’re in excellent hands, we will break down the differences between the gas-only vehicles you’re used to and the innovative hybrid models on the market today and how those differences can affect your bank account.
The biggest difference between hybrid vehicles and gas-only vehicles is that, besides a gas-powered engine, hybrid models have an electric motor that boosts the overall horsepower, torque, and fuel range of the vehicle. They also have a large battery pack that powers the electric motor. If you opt for a standard hybrid like the CX-50 hybrid, the battery will be recharged using regenerative braking. Plug-in hybrids like the CX-90 and CX-70 can also be recharged by being plugged into the grid. They have the added benefit of three energy modes – gas-only, hybrid, and electric-only. That means drivers can choose to use more affordable electric energy for quick trips around town and only use gas energy when they have to for longer journeys.
As of this writing (November 2024), the Mazda lineup includes three hybrid models, each with a unique set of features and benefits. Here’s a quick look at what they have to offer.
CX-50 HybridThis hybrid compact crossover SUV has seating for five passengers in a roomy cabin. As a hybrid model, it has an above-average fuel rating and an impressive range. The model features an available electric all-wheel drive system that makes traveling on wet roads or mildly challenging terrains easier. It also features a bevy of interior tech features like the available Alexa Built-In and a Bose® stereo system.
CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid The CX-70 PHEV is right above the CX-50 in terms of size but is a plug-in hybrid with the added functionality of traveling solely on electric power. The Mazda brand estimates that a fully charged CX-70 can travel up to 26 miles on electric power, meaning you can make a grocery run or visit your favorite restaurant without tapping into the fuel in the tank. The model has a total range of 490 miles and can seat up to five passengers. CX-90 Plug-In HybridIf you’re hunting for a fuel-efficient vehicle with a ton of space, the Mazda CX-90 PHEV is for you. This eight-seater mid-size SUV has a wealth of head and legroom in every row and an impressive total of 52.9 cubic feet of total cargo space. As far as fuel efficiency goes, the CX-90 offers the same electric-only range as its smaller line mate but with more power under the hood in the form of a 2.5-liter gas-electric powertrain that pumps out 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
