Indoor Hobbies To Avoid The Cold

December 19th, 2022 by

Woodworking is a great indoor hobby.

Some people love the bracing cold and get out in it every chance they get. This post isn’t for them. If you’re one of the many folks who would rather stay warm and dry indoors this winter, here are some hobbies that can keep you comfortable and occupied.

Build It

In the movie Field of Dreams, the main character hears a voice that says, “If you build it, they will come.” And while it’s a cool sentiment, we don’t believe folks will start showing up to your garage when you take up woodworking. However, building things with your own two hands is always gratifying. No, not every project will be perfect. You’ll learn a lot just by messing up a project and having to start anew. But at the end of the day, a hobby like woodworking is a comfortable and productive way to spend your winter downtime. You don’t need a ton of expensive equipment to begin, either. Start small to see how you like it, and then move up to bigger projects after you’ve learned the basics.

Write It Down

Journaling — whether on a computer or with good ol’ fashioned pen and ink — is a great pastime to take up. It’s inexpensive, for starters (unless you feel the need for luxury handmade leather-bound journals with gold leaf), and it leaves you alone with your thoughts. Lots of famous people have kept journals or diaries, like the British poet Samuel Johnson, presidents like Theodore Roosevelt, writers like Virginia Woolf and Ernest Hemingway, and artists like Andy Warhol. They used journaling as a way to detail their experiences and viewpoints. One of the chief benefits of journaling is that it’s just you and the page in front of you. Writing down what happened in your day, and what you thought about it all, is a great way to really get to know yourself and how and why you think.

The Important Part

Here’s the real key to surviving the winter months: Find something to do. It doesn’t have to be woodworking or journaling or lifting weights or any of the other 67 things from the linked post. But do something. Finding a productive way to use your time will help keep your sanity this winter.
