How To Put Away Your Winter Wardrobe

If you have limited closet space but a burgeoning wardrobe of stylish threads for every season, learn how to store your off-season wardrobe to give yourself more room.

Empty Your Closet

Sorting and storing your clothing isn’t a quick task, so plan to spend the day getting the job done. Start by taking everything out of your closet. You can spend the morning sorting through your clothing. You should make three piles. One pile is for items in good condition that you intend to keep. The second pile is for items you no longer wear and would like to donate. Finally, the third pile is for items that are damaged and need to be repaired or discarded.

Prep Your Clothes for Storage

Before you put your clothes in containers and put them up for the season, make sure you take steps to protect them. For instance, you should stuff your boots with pool noodles to help them maintain their shape while they are in storage. If you want to save space, you can use your scarves or winter socks to stuff your boots instead. You don’t want your shoe container to have a pungent odor when you open it in the fall, so make sure to deodorize each pair. For your clothes, make sure you check the pocket for candies, lip gloss, gum, or anything else that might melt or leak out, ruining your clothes.

Storing Your Clothes

After you’ve prepped your clothes, it’s time to put them away. You should use stackable containers of varying sizes. Sort your clothes into categories and store like items together. For example, place all of your scarves in a small container and all of your heavy winter coats in a large one. Sorting your clothes will help you when it’s time to pull it all back out again. It will also help you assess how many items you have in the same category and determine if there are any opportunities for you to pare down your wardrobe. Before you put the lid on your containers, make sure you label each container. You can go a step further and take a picture of what’s inside and tape it to the front of the bin.

Don’t Forget to Swap Out Your Emergency Clothing
