How To Care For Your Leather Interior

If you’ve recently purchased a new or pre-owned vehicle with leather trimming, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, or leather upholstery, you may be wondering how to care for it. Adding leather to your interior design can give it a luxe appearance and a palatial appeal when its properly cared for. When it isn’t, it can become unsightly. We want you to get the most years possible out of your vehicle, so follow these five steps to care for your leather interior elements.

1. Vacuum

The first step to keeping your leather interior in pristine condition is vacuuming. You should remove any crumbs, dirt, or other debris from your seats. If you attempt to clean your seats before you vacuum away the grit, you’ll just be pushing it around.

2. Use Leather Cleaner

Grab a bottle of your favorite leather cleaner and apply it to your seats. Next, get a soft bristled brush and gently agitate any problem areas. Areas that usually need a little extra attention are creases and areas that frequently come into contact with your skin or your hair. That means your headrest and leather-wrapped steering wheel will definitely require some deep cleaning.

3.Wipe It Dry

Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned your seats and other leather surfaces, get a soft micro-fiber cloth and wipe them dry. Unless your seats have been treated, they’ll likely remain slightly damp to the touch even after you’ve removed the extra moisture. Depending on your climate, it can take up to 24 hours for the leather to completely dry.

4. Condition Your Leather

When the leather has completely dried, it’s time to apply a leather conditioner. Pick a conditioner that will keep the leather moist, prevent cracking, and protect it from UV rays that can cause it to fade. Apply a generous amount to the your seats and other leather surfaces. Spread it out evenly then let it sit for four to six hours. This will allow the leather to absorb the conditioner and reap all of it’s benefits.

5. Wipe It Dry Again

Finally, wipe the conditioner away with your microfiber cloth, then completely dry your seats and you’re all done. You should complete this routine every three to six months to keep your leather interior looking great.
